Dell Latitude D620 looking to be a disappointment

with 4 comments

One of the new laptops I was waiting for, the Dell Latitude D620, is looking like it will be a disappointment. CoreDuoNews.com posted some leaked information from a review that was prematurely released (and cached by Google).

According to the article, it will have a 14.1″ screen (what I was looking for), but the upgraded screen is only going to offer 1440×900 resolution. What is it with the migration to widescreen displays on all of these laptops? Sorry, I don’t want a widescreen. Sorry, I don’t want less screen real estate. I like my square (or, mostly square) screen and I like 1400×1050.

/me shakes it head while walking away (yes, IRC reference… blogs need /me actions)

  1. I totally agree! D620 information has now been released on dell.com, and yes, it’s got a new 1440×900 resolution widescreen. Your comments are spot on.

  2. Guys,

You dump on a notebook because the resolution is 1440×900 vs 1400×1050? What’s the difference!

Me, I’m more worried about the reported poor wifi performance and blurring on DVD playback.  Otherwise, the weight and  price are great- where else can you get a 4 1/2lb laptop with a Duo processor for under $900?

  3. Yes, I would.  Since I work on my laptop a lot, screen real estate is one of my highest priorities.  If you’ve used Visual Studio or something like it, it is easy for the screen to get conjested.  It is only a hair wider, but 150 pixels shorter.  Think that is not much?  I didn’t think it was much either, until I created an image that was 1440×900 and one that was 1400×1050.  I didn’t like it.  It is almost 15% shorter.

You care about DVD playback, but for me, that is a low priority.  For me, it is screen resolution, weight, battery life, and wifi performance.

If price was an issue, then Thinkpads would certainly not be my personal favorite.  They are pricey, but quality hardware, durable, great utilities, and continual driver/software updates even for older models.

  4. They can’t fill the orders. I had a quote for the core duo D620 with the 256mb nVidia chip. When I tried to place the order, I was told that it wouldn’t be honored because the video chips weren’t available. Shortly after, they pulled the nVidia chip off the build options. My contact tells me it will be a month before they can add that option back. Good thinkin’ Dell.
