Great info! thanks for this. Though I'd like to let you know that I'm using TortoiseSVN 1.6.8 and with that you do need to have : in the path - something like “file:///d:repositories/test” works.

Nice info,

If you're not using subversion, is it still possible to move your repository to another machine ?

I suppose a simple cut / paste won't cut it :)

thanx a lot ken! this has helped me a lot. had setup a local svn server on my laptop, and i was manually moving the files from the base repo in a similar fashion anyways. this is a much simpler solution. thanx!

You aren't limited to being the only user of the files. As I mentioned in the post, it uses the user's Windows username with checkins, which still allows you to do user change tracking.

Plus, if if there are free hosting providers, some of the things are my own personal projects. Even on Google's site, they have a list projects you can browse. I write some of my own apps for some tracking finances and such. I don't want that on Google's site. Plus, I keep some project files from Telligent customers in my own Subversion server. I don't think they want their stuff up on Google. My way is a simple, 100% private, zero-cost solution.

Yes it's a nice way of using it, but this way you are limited to be the only user of your files. There are so many hosters that offer svn service that even for small projects I think is more convenient to put them there. http://code.google.com/hosting/ is one of them.
